Willy Lott's House, Flatford, in the Snow

Willy Lott's House, Flatford, in the snow, by DaveBulow

I cannot claim originality for the above photo in terms of composition, as it is a deliberate 'copy' of one shot in 2001 by Landscape Photographer Ken Rivers. Despite the similarities however, this photograph was taken yesterday. If I can get permission from Ken to show his original alongside it, I will update the blog post to show both.

Dedham Sunset Landscape - July 2005

Dedham Sunset Landscape - July 2005, by DaveBulow

Apologies for posting an older pic, but this one was never seen or edited... until today! I originally took this photo back in July 2005 on my old Bronica SQ-A (6x6 Square) 120 camera with its (fantastic) 40mm super-wide lens! Scanned to digital then edited in Photoshop CS3 for a few minutes and here's the result!

HDR Cumbria Lake District Landscape

Lake District HDR, Cumbria, by DaveBulow

I have shot a few weddings over the last few weeks, the photos of which will be posted on this blog very soon. In the mean time I thought I'd share an image which I edited for the first time since taking it back in 2008. I can't remember the exact location that this photograph was taken, but it was while on our honeymoon in the beautiful Lake District in May/June 2008.

Technical Info:
Camera: Canon EOS 5D
Lens: Canon EF 24-105L
A Few minutes in Capture One 4, Photomatix Light and PhotoShop.

Sunset from Flatford Lane, December 2004

Sunset from Flatford Lane, Flatford, December 2009, by DaveBulow

I was looking over some older images the other day (scans from old 35mm films, in fact), when I came across this shot, which I had ignored at the time because of the great difference in contrast between the foreground and background. This time round I had the Photoshop skills to make at least a half-decent picture out of it. Hope you like it, and don't mind me posting it so late! (5 years late, to be precise).

Technical Info:
Camera: Olympus OM-40
Lens: Probably my old Olympus Zuiko 28mm f/2.8 lens.

River Orwell and Rainbow

River Orwell and Rainbow, Suffolk, July 2009, by DaveBulow

This is the 5th and last photo from my brief photo excursion last Friday. Overall it's been quite fun, really, and it just goes to show that it's possible to take several very different looking photographs within a few miles of one another, and all in the space of about an hour.

Each of them has deliberately been given different post-exposure treatment to further exaggerate these differences. I've found RAW processing to be especially helpful, and you may notice the very cold blue feel to this last image, mainly thanks to being able to choose a different white balance post-exposure.

I hope you've enjoyed receiving them, and feel free to leave a comment on the blog to let me know if you have or if you haven't. Photography is entirely subjective to personal tastes and so I don't expect everyone to like my style.

Technical Info:
Camera: Canon EOS 5D
Lens: Olympus Zuiko 21mm f/3.5 (Yes I've used this lens rather a lot recently)

Some editing in Capture One 4 and Photoshop.

Old Tree in Bentley, Suffolk

Old Tree in Bentley, Suffolk, by DaveBulow

This photograph was taken just last night.

In a field a short distance from the A12, and just outside Bentley, a village just south of Ipswich stands this old tree.
The spot where this tree stands is quite close to my heart since it's where I took my now wife just before proposing to her 2 years ago.

Technical Info:
Camera: Canon EOS 5D
Lens: Olympus Zuiko 21mm f/3.5
Exposure: 1/60th @ f/22. ISO 100.

A slightly more extensive edit than usual, first in Capture One 4 and then in PhotoShop.

Scawgill Bridge, Cumbria, Lake District

Scawgill Bridge, Cumbria, Lake District, 7th November 2005, by DaveBulow

Another landscape photo from Cumbria and the Lake District.

Taken while on holiday in the Lake District in November 2005. This beautiful and secluded spot is found on Whinlatter Pass (B5292), in the Lorton Fells. As the sun went down it beautifully back-lit the stream, Whit Beck. There was just enough light left to get this shot.

Technical Details:
Olympus OM-40 + Zuiko 28mm f/2.8. Fuji Superia 200 film (35mm). Hand-held. 1/30th sec @ f/11. Selective burn and dodge layers and toning in Photoshop.

Seafield Bay, Brantham

Seafield Bay, Brantham, 26th December 2005, by DaveBulow

More old landscapes from East Anglia.

This photograph was taken one cold December bank hoilday in 2006, when I joined a group of friends on a walk in the area of Brantham (near Ipswich).

The light that day was incredible. Unfortunately I couldn't make full use of it, since moments after taking this photo, my camera seized up!

Toned using a customised 'Gradient Map' layer in Photoshop.

Technical Details:
Olympus OM-40 + Zuiko 35-70mm f/3.5. Fuji Superia 400 film (35mm). Hand-held. 1/500th sec @ f/11. Selective burn and dodge layers and toning in Photoshop.

Tattingstone

Tattingstone Tree, by DaveBulow
Tattingstone Crates, by DaveBulow

Continuing on the theme of posting older images, here are a couple of photos taken in Tattingstone, here in Suffolk, not too far from Ipswich.

These Tattingstone Landscape shots were taken about 5-10 minutes apart, back in 2004, with my old Olympus OM system, near the famous 'Tattingstone Wonder' (folly). Behind the tree in the first shot, on the hill, these two old crates just sat there, looking rather sorry, begging for a portrait.

Toned using a customised 'Gradient Map' layer in Photoshop.

Technical Details:
Olympus OM-40 + Zuiko 75-150mm f/4 lens (tree shot) and Zuiko 28mm f/2.8 lens (crates). Fuji Reala 100 film (35mm). Hand-held. Selective burn and dodge layers and toning in Photoshop.

More old landscapes this week I'm afraid.

It was early one cold Friday morning, back in December 2004 when I decided to pack the boot of my old MG Metro with my medium format Bronica SQ-A, tripod, and a selection of lenses. It must have been about 5:30am when I left Ipswich and headed down the A12 for the famous Flatford Landscape.

At the time, the only way for me to scan these negatives was using an Epson Perfection 3170 Photo flatbed scanner before 'burning and dodging' in Photoshop.

Technical Details:
Bronica SQ-A + PS 40mm f/4 lens. Fuji Reala 100 film (120). Tripod. Selective burn and dodge layers and toning in Photoshop.
